CRIT USA

Volunteer

Thank you so much for your interest in donating your time and effort to support CRIT-USA. We have hundreds of volunteers who work on-site at our children’s rehabilitation institute in San Antonio, Texas. These caring volunteers are at the heart of what we do. They help us achieve our mission of providing comprehensive, compassionate, state-of-the-art services to children with disabilities and their families.

Opportunities for Individuals and Groups

Our on-site CRIT-USA volunteers help our children and their families in many different ways.

The program matches volunteers with children currently receiving rehabilitation services at our center. The volunteers spend one-on-one time with a specific child or teen while participating in fun activities at our facility or while on outings in the community —such as to parks, museums, and farms. Additionally, among other things our volunteers may:

  • Accompany the children and their families while at the facility so they can guide them to their rehabilitation therapies and other appointments.
  • Lead tours for new families and other visitors.
  • Serve as translators (English and Spanish) for children and their families while they are at the facility.
  • Organize craft and other workshops for parents and fun activities for children to help them pass waiting time between appointments.
  • Provide childcare in the children’s room at the facility while parents are meeting with caseworkers.
  • Help with light office work, such as answering the phone and filing papers.

Some of our volunteers also participate in the CRIT-USA Buddy Program.

CRIT-USA Buddy Program

The CRIT-USA Buddy Program is for young people between the ages of 15 and 25 who wish to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and teens with disabilities.

The program matches young volunteers with children currently receiving rehabilitation services at our center. The volunteers spend one-on-one time with a specific child or teen while doing fun activities at our facility or while on outings in the community, such as to parks, museums, and farms.

The program has a dual purpose. Children with disabilities learn how to integrate socially within their communities and to become more independent. Volunteers learn what it means to have a disability and that people with disabilities are essentially just like them. This knowledge transforms our volunteers into ambassadors for people with disabilities, thus helping society expand its boundaries to be more inclusive of people with special physical needs.

Young people can volunteer for the CRIT-USA Buddy Program in two ways:

  1. Club TeletonUSA: This program meets for seven Saturdays twice a year, usually in the spring and fall. Volunteers receive training on the first Saturday of each session. The remaining six Saturdays are spent interacting with CRIT-USA children and teens on outings in the community.
  2. Summer TeletonUSA: This program meets once each summer for two weeks, Monday through Friday. On most days, the volunteers engage in activities with CRIT-USA children and teens at the facility. Two of the days, however, are spent in the community doing recreational activities.

All volunteers for the CRIT-USA Buddy Program must commit to a full Club Telethon or Summer Telethon session. The program also has other requirements, including an in-person interview.

Contact us for more information or to apply. By becoming a CRIT-USA Buddy Program volunteer, you can change a life — including your own.
